Who I Tutor

I mainly work with secondary-school students studying KS3 Science and GCSE Science. Tuition can support students who are finding particular topics difficult, students with gaps in earlier knowledge, and students who want more focused preparation for GCSE examinations.

The level and pace of each lesson are adjusted to suit the student.

Subjects I Teach

I have particularly strong experience with the AQA Science specification and GCSE examination preparation. I can also adapt tuition to students following other examination boards.

How Lessons Work

I use the student’s current understanding, schoolwork and goals to decide what we should work on and how much support is needed.

1. Review previous learning

   We revisit important ideas and check what the student remembers.

2. Identify gaps or misconceptions

   Questioning and short tasks help locate secure understanding and remaining difficulties.

3. Explain and model difficult ideas

   I break concepts into manageable steps and work through examples.

4. Guided practice

   The student works through questions with support, addressing mistakes as they arise.

5. Independent practice

   Support is gradually reduced so the student can apply ideas independently.

6. Examination practice

   GCSE lessons can include examination-style questions, calculations, required practicals and extended responses.

7. Review and next steps

   We identify what is now secure and what should be revisited.

This structure is flexible. An upcoming test, difficult homework topic or particular area of difficulty can shape the lesson.

Your First Tutoring Session

Establishing a useful starting point

The first session is partly about teaching and partly about helping me understand the student as a learner.

• Current understanding and topics they find difficult
• Recent assessment results and target grades, where applicable
• Confidence in different areas of science
• Preferred areas of focus
• Upcoming examinations or assessments

I may use discussion, questioning and a small number of diagnostic questions to identify strengths and gaps. The aim is not to spend an hour simply testing the student. I want them to leave having learned something useful, while giving me enough information to plan future tuition effectively.

Recent assessments, school feedback, topic lists or revision materials can help identify priorities.

Online Tuition

Lessons take place one-to-one online using Microsoft Teams. Sessions combine explanation, questioning, worked examples, guided practice and independent work according to the student’s needs.
